Qualitative Analysis of Returnee's adaptability to school life in Elementary school

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze realities of elementary school students who have experienced returning from overseas, difficulties in adapting school life of home country as well as their characteristics to find practical solutions for both the students and Korean education system using qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The research was administered on returnees of regular class(not special class for returnees) in an elementary school in Busan. The chosen interviewee are total of 14(6 male students and 8 female students) and they are 4th to 6th grade who have experienced living or studying abroad for 1 year to 5 years. Average duration of their living aboard is 2 years and 8 months, and duration of staying home country from returning is 1 year and 3 months. To achieve of the aims of this study, the research administered by depth-interview. The results of this study are as the follows. First, returnees have experiences emotional difficulties for language and culture in gap of life between overseas and Korea. Second, returnees experienced a huge gap of schoolwork. Mostly, educational systems in foreign countries(particularly western countries) encourage students to get knowledge actively by various experiments and practices while Korean educational system focuses on memorizing and the cramming method of teaching. Third, returnees wish to have relationship with teachers who are more kind, careful and helpful to learn. And also returnees wanted to be treated equally with local students while they expect concealed special care for their better school life. Fourth, returnees want friends who are not violent and aggressive, and do not use bad language. That is, returnees feel more comfortable with kind, helpful and easy-going friends. Fifth, returnees felt that Korean school has more regulations and more strict than foreign school they used to be in the past. It is a part of reasons that returnees get easily boresome to participate in school activities. According to these results, finding and implications are discussed.
